Higher Depths

Once he dreamt of lofty heights
Ambitions grand and glory bright
Starry eyed he began to climb –
Heaven up above

As he rose the seasons turned
Summer storms for autumn yearned
Skyward gaze begins to waver
Earth down below

Single glance backward thrown
Noble aim becomes undone
No more does he crave the stars
Cold β€˜tis above

Path once forged straight and right
Yet higher purpose doth slip his sight
For ever hard it is to climb above
Comfort lies below

Too late the memory stirs
An idealistic child, long interred
He plummets down toward the ground
Staring up above

Now he toils at dusty desk
Pen in hand and crick in neck
Eyes too sharp for task mundane:
Em-dash here and italic there
